Developmental editing is a phase of the book editing process where editors provide a thorough assessment of an author’s content to help determine what it requires in order to be ready for publishing. This is a collaborative process between the author and editor that requires an open mind and patience. 

The Developmental Edit Process Can Include:

  • Clarifying intent and message to ensure that the subject matter is being communicated clearly to the audience for which the book is intended. 
  • Addressing various story/message element issues like gaps or inconsistencies that go against the flow of logic established by the story's plot or message. 
  • Identifying and resolving confusing dialogue, sentence structure/phrasing, and any other issues that arise in relation to story/message elements.
  • Line edit help identify run-on sentences or clichés, sentence flow, make sure the tone is consistent, and fine-tune the word choice and syntax of your manuscript
  • Proofreading to identify and resolve typos and grammatical errors. 
  • Author review and rewrite (as needed). 

This process can take anywhere from 30-60 days and in some rare cases a little longer. The entire process is dependent upon the book's timeline, communication, commitment, follow-through, and availability of authors. 

Line Edit: Works line-by-line, tightening up sentence structure so the language is clear and concise. They intently review how a writer’s word choice and syntax contribute to the tone or emotion of the content. A line editor is also concerned with the overall pacing and logical flow of the content.

Copy Edit: Concentrates on the language in a manuscript and assures it follows the rules of standard English, combing through the manuscript for typos and other mistakes before it goes to print.

Proofreading: Focuses on correcting minor errors and inconsistencies

The average non-fiction book has between 40,000 - 45,000 word count and 120 or more pages. Note, this is all dependent on book size. 

The average children’s book is between 750-1000 word count and up to 25-30 pages. Note, this is all dependent on book size.

Self-publishing is when an author decides to print and distribute their own work themselves, bypassing traditional publishing companies. Self-publishing provides you with freedom and an active voice in your creative work.

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number and is a 13-digit number that identifies published books. It is important to note that once an ISBN is assigned to a book, an ISBN can never be reused.

ISBNs are assigned by publishers.

An ISBN identifies the registrant (author), title, edition (if applicable), and format of products used by publishers, bookstores, libraries, etc.

ISBNs are important for ordering, sales reporting, and inventory control.

An ISBN increases the chances that your book will be found for purchase. Most bookstores will not feature or sell any book that is not first listed within their warehouse database. Copyright is a law. In the United States, the law is embodied in the Copyright Act of 1976, Title 17 of the U.S. Code.
